Rocky Mountain Antiquarian Booksellers Scholarship to Seminar

The Rocky Mountain Antiquarian Booksellers Association
(RMABA) is offering two $750 scholarships to the 2009 Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar to be held August 2-7, 2009 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Competition is open to residents of Colorado, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming. (RMABA member states).

To apply for a scholarship applicants should:
1. Write a ONE PAGE letter telling the committee about yourself and why you should receive one of the RMABA Scholarships. Letters of support are welcome, but not required.

2. Email your application (preferred) to or send it to RMABA Scholarship, c/o Sue Gallagher, Gallagher Books, 1428 S. Broadway, Denver, CO 80210.

3. Entries must be emailed or postmarked no later than Tuesday, June 15, 2009.

Successful candidates will be notified by Tuesday, July 1, 2009 and the awards will be presented at the seminar opening event.

Pikes Peak Conference Extends Early Bird Rate

We know these are challenging times for writers everywhere, so we have extended the early bird pricing on conference registrations until April 10. Sometimes ten days can make a big difference in the mustering of resources, and the early bird price provides a substantial discount. If you are not a Pikes Peak Writers member remember that joining PPW at the same time you register is like getting $20 handed to you. A one-year membership is only $35 and the difference between member and non-member price is $55. Even if you don’t live in the Pikes Peak Region, as a member you can benefit from the NewsMagazine, workshop discounts, and the camaraderie of 400+ writers who are passionate about their craft.

Don’t forget, we also have a Thursday only optional program, with a choice of three tracks. “Thinking it Through” for beginning writers; “Fleshing it Out” for intermediate writers, and “Giving it Wings” for advanced published or 
soon-to-be published writers. You do not have to be registered for the full 
conference to attend the Thursday workshops, but you must register. (Thursday

Pikes Peak Writers Conference begins one month from today!

This means that there are a few deadlines coming up that you should be
aware of–

TODAY is the last day to reserve a hotel room at the Marriott with the
special PPWC discounted rate. If you call later in the week, the
hotel MIGHT honor it, but better to be safe and call today:

APRIL 1 marks the date that the PPWC registration fees go up. To
register at the best rate, do it before the end of the month.

In case you need some encouragement, here are some reasons to register for

Aspen Summer Words

April 3-4 Northern Colorado Writers Conference

The 4th Annual Northern Colorado Writers Conference, happens April 3-4 at the Fort Collins Hilton.

This two day event, featured in the March issue of Writers Digest, will inspire and inform writers of all genres and levels. There will be over 20 workshops to choose from, plus agent pitch sessions, magazine editors, 2 great keynote speakers, a bookstore and networking opportunities.

Writers Studio Announces its 3nd Annual Spring Literary Festival Saturday, April 4, 9:00a.m.-3:30p.m., Half Moon Arapahoe Community College Main Building

In our ongoing quest to provide students and the communities south of downtown Denver access to the best writers in Colorado through literary events and readings, Writers Studio is happy to announce its third annual Spring Literary Festival.

Workshop participants will be able to choose morning and afternoon workshops in nonfiction, poetry, fiction, and the lyric essay, taught by nationally published, award-winning writers highly experienced in teaching the writing workshop.

Genre Conventions

Opus Fest is back March 13-15, 2009, after a one-year hiatus. Check for details and a forthcoming schedule, but here are some highlights:

  • Held at the Red Lion Hotel, 4040 Quebec at I-70 and Quebec, on the north side of the Stapleton area.
  • Who Else! Books will be selling books in the vendors room.

  • Schedule will be posted soon, but right now we know there will be a vendor hall, an art show, an art auction, autograph and reading sessions, costume ball, and Six Stones – Society in Shadow (LARP).
  • Authors scheduled: Ilona Andrews (Guest of Honor with husband co-writer Gordon), David Boop, Shannah Biondine, Lynda Hilburn, Dan Hoyt, Robert Hoyt, Sarah Hoyt (Toastmaster), Alan Lickiss, Rebecca Lickiss, Christopher Salas, Carrie Vaughn, Tammy Yourzek, and, in a virtual appearance via Second Life, Michael Stackpole. You can bet we’ll be supporting them by carrying their books. In fact, we secured special permission from the publisher to offer Ilona’s new book, which will not hit book store shelves, not even the Denver Book Mall’s, until March 31.

Be sure to also check out StarFest, which this year will include 3 other conventions within that convention: HorrorFest, GameFest, and ComicFest. Takes place April 17-19.

  • WhoElse! Books will be selling books at HorrorFest.
  • StarFest is a long-running media-oriented convention which attracts hundreds, if not thousands, of people each spring. HorrorFest has been a part of it for about 11 years.
  • Your paid admission to StarFest automatically includes everything at HorrorFest, right in the same hotel, the Marriott Denver Tech Center.
  • Author guests this year for HorrorFest are favorites Mario Acevedo and Carrie Vaughn, with another guest to be announced. Some of the confirmed guests so far for the overarching StarFest are Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck – Battlestar:Galactica) Robert Picardo (Stargate Atlantis and Voyager), Ethan Phillips (Voyager), Brent Spiner (Data, Star Trek Next Generation) and William Katt (Greatest American Hero).
