Commander Lori Moriarty, National Council for Drug Endangered Children

Program: The Perils of Endangered Children
Commander Lori Moriarty will shared a mixture of stories about endangered children from her career in law enforcement. She will cover issues such as children left behind during drug arrests, the perils faced by children in homes with methamphetamine labs and other dangerous drugs and drug arrests with children involved. She will show a video of a drug raid and tell the story that goes with it, including the family history and what can happen to a family due to substance abuse.

Bios: Lori Moriarty (retired) began her career in law enforcement in Colorado with the Thornton Police Department in 1987 where one of her positions included child abuse investigator. From 2000-2007 she was assiged as the Commander of the North Metro Task Force which is a multi-jurisdictional undercover drug unit in Adams and Broomfield counties. Cmdr Moriarty has been involved in training tens of thousands of professionals across the nation on the plight of drug endangered children. For the past four years she has helped with the growth and development of the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children.

She has appeared on various national news programs in an effort to educate citizens on the hazards of methamphetamine drug labs, marijuana growing operations and other illicit drug activitiy and the effects on children living in these dangerous drug environments. In 2004 Cmdr Moriarty received the "Friend of Children" award through the State of Colorado Court Appointed Special Advocates. In 2008 she became a foster parent to a newborn child and his two year old brother who were at risk due to a caregiver’s cocaine use.
