Writing a memoir? This workshop will focus on how to turn life stories into compelling writing, and is designed specifically for those writers who have already started a project – and who now wanting guidance, structure, and feedback. Discussions will focus on contemporary memoirs – readings and writing exercises. We will also be discussing nonfiction fundamentals: the central dramatic questions and themes, how to craft scenes, ways to build tension, and the ever-tricky business of pacing through the balanced use of showing and telling. Students share one piece (one essay or chapter) with the group for constructive critique.

Note: students should bring 10 copies of 5-10 pages of their memoir on the first day of class, and should be prepared to do lots of reading during the four weeks.
