2010 Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold Contest Workshop

WHEN: 27 March, 2010, 2:00 to 4:00 PM

WHERE: Bel Mar Library, 555 S. Allison Parkway (southwest of Alameda and Wadsworth)

Here’s your opportunity to get a heads up on the 2010 Colorado Gold Writing Contest. Join Terry Wright for this pre-contest workshop and learn how you can increase your chances of making the finals. That’s what it takes to get your work in the hands of an acquiring agent or editor. It just might turn out to be the big break you’ve been working for. Publication. However, if your verbs are passive, your scenes are vague, or your characters are flat, and/or your synopsis is more plot than character, you might miss the final round. So take the time to benefit from Terry’s years of experience as a contest judge and coordinator.

You’ll learn what the judges are looking for in your submission. Did you set the scene? Do you have a hook? Is there a scene goal? Do you show and not tell? Have you given the judges a reason to keep reading your submission?

Are your characters motivated or orchestrated? Do they have clear goals? Have you breathed life into them with conflict and emotion? Is your POV character rich with internal conflict, internal dialogue, hopes, dreams and fears? Will the judges think your characters are multi-dimensional or flat as cardboard?

How about your synopsis? Remember, story is about characters. What do your characters want? Why can’t they have it? What must they do to get it, and most importantly and widely forgotten: What’s at stake if they fail? You’ll learn the ingredients for a winning synopsis.

This year’s Colorado Gold Writing Contest will be conducted
electronically. No mail in entries. Terry will tell you how to prepare your submission for upload and explain the procedure.

So mark your calendars and get ready for the contest, which opens April, 1 2010. The deadline is June 1, 2010. Your goal is to make the finals and get your work in front of an acquiring agent or editor. This workshop will help you reach that goal. See you there!
