Dinner with a Bomb Squad Tech

Rocky Mountain Mystery Writers of America joins with The Rocky Mountain Chapter of Sisters in Crime to invite Richard Nakata to dinner. This former bomb Squad Tech was one of the first responders to Columbine H.S. in April, 1999.

WHEN: April 9th , 2009 Where: The Denver Press Club, 1330 Glenarm, Denver

TIME: 7:00 p.m. dinner, 8:00 p.m. program

Cost: $20 for meal, dessert, taxes, gratuities AND program! (checks and cash only please)

Menu: Mixed Field Green Salad with Marcona Almonds, Spanish Blue Cheese and Poached Pear Vinaigrette; Porcini Dusted Chicken Breasts with Artichokes, Arugala, Tomatoes and White Wine Truffle Sauce; Brie and Herb Flavored Soft Polenta; Steamed Green Beans with Carmelized Pearl Onions; Assorted Breads and Butter; Meyer Lemon Infused Creme Brulee and beverages. PROGRAM: On April 20, 1999, at about 11:30 PM, Richard Nakata was nearly killed by two pipe bombs that detonated at Columbine High School. He was a sergeant working for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and was called in to assist as one of sixteen Bomb Squad Technicians in one of the worst school disasters in the United States. Listen as he recalls the circumstances of working the scene. Time permitting; he will also talk about being an Inspector for the Office of Professional Services (aka Internal Affairs), his worst and most satisfying assignment while working for the ACSO.

The directions to the Denver Press Club: 1-25 to 6th Ave. east. Turn north from 6th Avenue onto Santa Fe Drive, then turn right from Santa Fe onto Colfax Ave (15th). You will be heading east. Go about 4 blocks to Glenarm and turn left (north). The Denver Press Club will be about a block and one-half on the right side, across from the Denver Athletic Club. It’s a small stone building with an awning. Parking is available to the south, in the lot next to the Press Club. Bring singles or a credit card, as the machine won’t make change. You must pay the machine and then leave the ticket on your dashboard or be ticketed. In addition, there is some meter parking on the street, for which you will need quarters.
