Genre Conventions

Opus Fest is back March 13-15, 2009, after a one-year hiatus. Check for details and a forthcoming schedule, but here are some highlights:

  • Held at the Red Lion Hotel, 4040 Quebec at I-70 and Quebec, on the north side of the Stapleton area.
  • Who Else! Books will be selling books in the vendors room.
  • Hotel room rates are a fabulous $69 per night plus tax and fees. Use “Opus09” code online at or phone 800-733-5466.
  • Use coupon code “ADB119” when registering for Opus Fest at and get $5 off adult passes. Good only until 11:55pm MST on 3/12/09, for unlimited use.
  • Schedule will be posted soon, but right now we know there will be a vendor hall, an art show, an art auction, autograph and reading sessions, costume ball, and Six Stones – Society in Shadow (LARP).
  • Authors scheduled: Ilona Andrews (Guest of Honor with husband co-writer Gordon), David Boop, Shannah Biondine, Lynda Hilburn, Dan Hoyt, Robert Hoyt, Sarah Hoyt (Toastmaster), Alan Lickiss, Rebecca Lickiss, Christopher Salas, Carrie Vaughn, Tammy Yourzek, and, in a virtual appearance via Second Life, Michael Stackpole. You can bet we’ll be supporting them by carrying their books. In fact, we secured special permission from the publisher to offer Ilona’s new book, which will not hit book store shelves, not even the Denver Book Mall’s, until March 31.

Be sure to also check out StarFest, which this year will include 3 other conventions within that convention: HorrorFest, GameFest, and ComicFest. Takes place April 17-19.

  • WhoElse! Books will be selling books at HorrorFest.
  • StarFest is a long-running media-oriented convention which attracts hundreds, if not thousands, of people each spring. HorrorFest has been a part of it for about 11 years.
  • Your paid admission to StarFest automatically includes everything at HorrorFest, right in the same hotel, the Marriott Denver Tech Center.
  • Author guests this year for HorrorFest are favorites Mario Acevedo and Carrie Vaughn, with another guest to be announced. Some of the confirmed guests so far for the overarching StarFest are Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck – Battlestar:Galactica) Robert Picardo (Stargate Atlantis and Voyager), Ethan Phillips (Voyager), Brent Spiner (Data, Star Trek Next Generation) and William Katt (Greatest American Hero).
