Colorado Authors’ League 2012 Awards

It’s time to pick your best work published in 2011 for entry in the Colorado Authors’ League 2012 awards contest. Details about the contest and applications are at www.ColoradoAuthors.org. The deadline for entries is January 31, 2012.
Not a CAL member? Join! Join and enter your work.

Keep in mind that the CAL awards contest is not just for books! Entry categories cover the gamut of writing reflected in our organization’s broad membership—articles, short stories, essays, poetry, and specialty writing, as well as fiction and nonfiction books for adults and youth. Once again, judging will be independently conducted by SouthWest Writers, who did a fine job last year.

Now don’t dismiss our awards contest as some shallow beauty pageant whose winners get to flaunt a handsomely engraved glass award on their bookshelf or in their foyer (though the award is handsome). For one thing, the announcement of the finalists and the winners provide a precious opportunity for CAL to showcase our members’ best works to the statewide writing community, as well as the reading public, thereby strengthening the visibility and viability of our organization. Second, CAL winners tell us that they’ve used their awards to promote their winning projects and further their writing careers.

The Colorado Center for the Book at Colorado Humanities is Now Accepting Entries for the 2012 Colorado Book Awards

Nominations Must Be Received By January 13, 2012

DENVER, CO (December 21, 2011)–Colorado Humanities and its program department, Colorado Center for the Book, are accepting nominations until January 13, 2012 for the 21st annual Colorado Book Awards. The Book Awards recognize and promote Colorado’s finest writers, illustrators, photographers and editors. Finalists and winners will be honored in an award event to be held in Aspen next June as part of Aspen Summer Words.

The Colorado Book Award program is one of the oldest book award programs in the country, receiving 150 qualified submissions annually. Program Coordinator, Jennifer Long says. “Finalists will be announced in April 2012 followed by readings and book signings in the Denver metro and other areas. These readings are a great way to hear what’s hot by local authors and to enjoy an evening of fun discussion and hobnobbing with the local literati.”

To enter the competition with digital or printed books, authors, editors, illustrators, photographers and publishers should visit www.coloradohumanities.org, click on Programs/Events and select Colorado Book Awards. A $53 fee must accompany each entry. Fans and friends may send suggestions of books to be entered to Jennifer Long at long@coloradohumanities.org in advance of the deadline.

The public is also invited to participate as Selectors of the finalists in up to twelve categories. Applications to serve as a Selector are also available atwww.coloradohumanities.org.

The Colorado Center for the Book, founded in 1989 as a state affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, is among the most active of the 50 state centers for the book. With at least five major projects and the strong support of Colorado Humanities, its host institution, it is making a difference in the lives of readers—and potential readers—in every corner of the state.

January’s Winter BookCamp

Maverick Book Marketing with Brian Jud
Millions of titles are now published every year with the “e” world in play. You are competing with them for shelf space, airtime, and your customer’s wallet. But there are better, easier, more profitable ways to sell your books – and Brian will tell you all about them. With a little creativity you can upstage, differ from, and outperform your competition. Brian will show you where to find thousands of prospective buyers in non-bookstore venues. He will help you stand out from the crowd of books displayed on retail store shelves. You will discover how to sell more books to non-bookstore retailers such as gift shops, supermarkets, discount stores, warehouse clubs, book clubs, catalogs, airport stores, and home-shopping networks. He’s bringing new information for 2012!
You will discover:
. how to sell more books in ways your never thought possible; . why niche publishing can be the best way to increase your sales, revenue, and profits;
. how to convert a nonfiction book into a money-making juggernaut; . how to market fiction to more buyers, more profitably;
. a new business model for exploiting today’s multiple marketplaces; . the best promotion, sales, and distribution tips to sell more books and make more money;
. how to create a mutually profitable proposal and effectively present it to your prospects;

PROGRAM: Interviewing and Polygraphing Convicted Sex Offenders

Get the details on polygraphs and what it takes to monitor, interview and polygraph sex offenders. Tom Sheely worked for the Vail Police Department for 20 years from 1978 to 1998, was a street officer for 10 years and a sergeant for the last 10. During that time he worked as a juvenile/public affairs officer, swat team leader and finally as the administrative sergeant involved in hiring and event planning.

He returned to school to learn to do polygraphs and eventually interned with his current company Amich & Jenks Inc. They specialize in testing and helping to monitor convicted sex offenders. To date Tom has conducted approximately 15,000 polygraph test of which about 9000 were with the offenders. The firm also does pre-employment polygraphs for police and fire department, pre-conviction criminal tests and “fidelity” examinations. Tom works in several prisons across the state that have sex offender treatment programs.
